There are over 140 different forms of energy healing labelled as ‘Reiki’, each with its own methods and theory. The one thing that is common to all forms of Reiki is the channelling of energy for healing purposes. The way the energy is channelled and used varies between the differing forms. If a course is described as a traditional Japanese Reiki (Usui Reiki Ryoho) course, there are certain elements that should be included to ensure it is authentic. At a very minimum, the course should teach the correct use of the shirushi (symbols) and kotodama (a form of mantra) and the correct method of treatment. Of course there is much more to Usui Reiki Ryoho than the shirushi and kotodama.
A good well structured Usui Reiki course should teach all of Mikao Usui's teachings as far as we know them. This includes the documented history of Mikao Usui and his Reiki Ryoho, the philosophy and core principles that underpin his Reiki Ryoho, the shirushi and kotodama, the Gokai (Reiki ideals) and the practical methods. The theory must be taught accurately and students made aware of the importance of spending time in practice to become proficient in the methods. Usui Reiki Ryoho is a Japanese art, and as such requires the student to practice every technique with a high level of accuracy and focus. Time should be allocated for students to practice the methods during the Reiki course. Any mistakes need to be corrected by the teacher to ensure students are practicing correctly from the start. In this way students can develop good practice and become proficient in the art of Reiki.
A level 1 course should prepare the student to use the Rei component of Reiki for their self-healing.
This means having the required level of connection through Denju and a good understanding of the level 1 theory.
A level 2 course should prepare the student to use the Ki component of Reiki for their self-healing and for treating others safely, effectively and professionally.
There also needs to be a section that covers the practical and regulatory requirements of being a Reiki practitioner.
There are four Denju (attunements) for level 1 and one Denju for level 2. Denju needs to be carried out by the Reiki teacher using the correct method and with high levels of focus and concentration.
That above is a starting point for a good Reiki course. A good grounding in the knowledge and practical methods of Reiki Ryoho are essential for any Reiki course. The other equally important element of a good Reiki course is the spiritual growth that is initiated by the Denju process. The Denju process will connect the student to the source of the energy and allow them to channel the energy. A direct result of this is an increase in their awareness and understanding. This will generally bring about changes in their emotional and physical life as they learn to trust and follow their intuitive guidance. A good Reiki course will help students connect to and understand their life path as they grow spiritually and move towards enlightenment.
